What is an FSSAI license?

As a result of its name, FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standard Authority of India. The government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare oversees this independent agency. Before food goods reach customers, this agency guarantees that they fulfill specific quality and safety criteria.

As a result of a valid FSSAI license or registration, every food production and distribution business must have approval from the FSSAI.

Registration with the FSSAI and a license are two different things. Either a state/central license or an FSSAI registration is required, depending on your business’s size and operation.

A 14-digit license number will be assigned to your firm once it has been officially registered. Your license number provides information about your license status, your location, the year of your registration, and other facts.

Types of Fssai license?

FSSAI registration

  • FSSAI registration is open to any food production, processing, or storage firm with yearly revenue of less than 12 lakh rupees.
  • Other examples of this type of business include very small eateries, petty shops, hawkers, temporary stallholders, and home-cooked meal enterprises.

In addition to this, the following businesses/entities must be registered with the FSSAI:

  • Those businesses with a daily food production capacity of less than 100 kg/lit.
  • A firm that has a full capacity of fewer than 500 liters of milk per day.
  • Maximum slaughtering capacity of 2 large or 10 tiny animals for an animal slaughtering business

State FSSAI license

Anyone who runs a food business that isn’t small but isn’t huge must get an FSSAI license. This will give you an idea of how large a firm must be to qualify for a state license. However, additional requirements may also apply, such as:

  • A dairy plant with a daily milk production rate of 501 to 50000 LPD or 2.5 to 2500 MT of milk solids per year.
  • Wholesalers having annual sales of less than $30 million.
  • With a turnover of less than $20 million, clubs, restaurants, and canteens are considered small businesses.
  • Hotels with more than three stars, but less than five stars.

Central FSSAI license

Big firms are required to register centrally. The FSSAI requires a central license if your business generates above 20 crores in revenue. Another set of requirements is:

  • Hotels with five-star ratings or higher are considered luxury accommodations.
  • Exporters of food products in the food industry.
  • Chain restaurants and large restaurants are examples of this (with more than 20cr turnover).
  • All commercial imports of food and ingredients.
  • Dairy facilities with a capacity of more than 50000 gallons per day.

  • Petty local neighborhood milkmen and milk vendors, milk chilling units, and milk vendors.
  • Units for the processing of vegetable oil
  • stores and slaughterhouses for mutton, chicken, lamb, and other meats
  • All businesses engaged in the production or processing of food.
  • Vehicles used by food product transporters include food trucks, refrigerated vans, and milk tankers, among others.
  • Hotels, restaurants, and bars make up the majority of the hospitality industry.
  • Canteens and cafeterias, including mid-day food canteens, are located throughout the school building.
  • Local hotels and motels that provide cuisine are available in the area.
  • In the vicinity of religious organizations, you’ll find food stands.
  • Businesses that operate online. You’ll find everything here, from tiny dark kitchens to giants like Swiggy or Zomato
  • Exporters of food products and ingredients are a growing industry.
  • In addition, there are commercial importers who import food ingredients.
  • Small businesses that specialize in selling unique and novel foods.
  • A storage facility that is cold or refrigerated.

 How to Apply for an FSSAI License

As long as you have all the relevant documentation and your firm satisfies FSSAI requirements, obtaining your FSSAI license shouldn’t be too difficult. Applying is a really simple process:

  • In the Food and Safety Department, submit Form A (for registration with the Food and Safety Authority of India) or Form B (for a state/central license). You can also apply online through the FosCos portal.
  • With Form A or Form B, submit all essential documentation. Verify that your documents are legitimate before submitting them. Send your documents using the FoSCos portal.
  • Within 7 days, this application can be accepted, denied, or returned with questions. Congratulations if your application was accepted. You will receive a registration certificate in the near future, which will include your registration/license number and image. Your license certificate must be displayed at your company location.

Be happy if your application is denied due to bad luck. After 3 months, you can reapply with all the required documentation.

It is important to react as quickly as possible after your application has been returned with questions. If the applicant fails to respond swiftly, applications with editing/modification requests or queries are typically rejected.
